GITLINS’ METHOD
SYNDACTYLY is a condition where one or more toes and connected together with skin. There are many degrees of this but this case illustrates the worst case where all toes are stuck together all the way to the tips.
The typical way of doing this is to do a complicated plastic surgical procedure called a ‘modified Z plasty’. If its two toes connected that may work just fine but with all the toes like this case it is very dangerous to attempt. So - we came up with our own minimally invasive and safer technique.
We applied an external fixator to the patients toes and use stretched them apart over a period of 2 weeks. This allows skin to actually regenerate!! We the were able to bring the patient back to surgery with the toes all fanned away from each other and simply cut between the toes and sew it all up.
