PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
In August of 2011, Dr. David Gitlin, DPM FACFAS was appointed to the prestigeous position of Director of Podiatric Residency Education at the Beth Israel Medical Center. Beth Israel Medical Center is one of the oldest hospitals in the United States being incorporated in 1890. In 1891 it opened a 20 bed hospital, in 1902 it expanded into a 115 bed facility. In 1929 it moved to its current location, a 13 floor , 500 bed hospital. The facility purchased Manhattan General Hospital in 1964 and created what is now know as the Beth Israel Medical Center, a 1,368 bed hospital serving all people of the New York Area.
In 2013 Beth Israel Medical Center merged with Mount Sinai Medical Center and the Icahn School of Medicine to form the Mount Sinai Health System.
There are residency training programs there in almost every specialty of medicine and surgery. The Podiatric Surgical Training Program was created there in 2008 and has now expanded to the Kings County Beth Israel division in Brooklyn as well. The program has the support of hundreds of local Manhattan podiatric physicians and surgeons and has become one of the highly regarded training programs in the country.
In 2016 Dr. Gitlin was promoted to overall program director of all Mount Sinai Hospital Podiatric surgery training sites. This includes Mount Sinai Medical center, Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Lukes , Roosevelt Sinai West, Mount Sinai of Queens, Sinai Brooklyn Kings Highway and our affiliated institutions. This includes a total of 36 residents in a 4 year program at the largest medical and surgical training center in the world.
At this three year surgical program residents recieve training in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery. Elective procedures, reconstructive procedures, cosmetic procedures, trauma surgery and of course limb salvage surgery are all performed on a regular basis at Beth Israel Medical Center of New York and Mount Sinai. We have a very busy wound care service throughout the hospital treating inpatients and outpatients as well. We provide an interdisciplinary approach to all difficult cases especially those in our diabetic population. We are the only residency in the region that can offer training in classic ilizarov technique and the only one in the area that exposes residents to the use of flaps ( muscle, skin, rotational, fascial, etc. ) in coverage of wounds.
Our didactic program consists of weekly journal review as well as weekly pre-op and post-op case review. We invite residents from all local programs to participate if they wish. We also have a monthly lecture series that is open to students, residents, interns, and local podiatrists, medical doctors, and surgeons that brings local, national, and international speakers to our institution to present informative lectures and case presentations. We provide CME credits for these as well whenever possible.
