TENDON INJURIES

in the FOOT and ANKLE

(THE MOST COMMON ONES)

Achilles Tendon:

This is one of the most powerful tendons in the human body. When there is an injury to this tendon it can have significant consequences to someones walking and running. Surgery is not always necessary, sometimes when the tear is just partial, a cast will heal the tendon well. Your doctor must guide you as to the correct treatment. Thankfully there are great surgical procedures repair an achilles tendon tear. There are two kinds of injuries that are most common here, the acute injury and the old injury that was either incorrectly treated or not treated at all. Click here (Achilles Reconstruction) for more information.

Posterior Tibial Tendon

This tendon is locatedo n the inside of the ankle just below the inside ankle bone ( medial malleolus). It is also a very strong tendon since part of its job is to help hold up the arch. Acute injuries can tear this tendon but we usually see chronic injuries damaging this tendon a bit more often. When a long standing inflammation injures this tendon, it can cause severe weakness and possibly even a flattening of the patients arch. This is simply because the tendon cannot do its primary job. We call this condition PTTD or posterior tibial tendon dysfunction. Click here to read how we deal with this. IT can be severly debilitating in many cases. There are conservative treatments for this but Dr. Gitlin specializes in the surgical repair when either the condition is beyond conservative care or the nonoperative care has failed. The key is to realign all of the bones that have shifted to put the tendon back into its nomral positions.
