Unfortunately sometimes amputation is necessary, on many occasions an amputation will actually give a patient back their life.
We dont jump to this as a primary treatment, we almost always recommend some attempt at reconstruction and limb preservation. When amputation is needed, there are very specific techniques that need to be used. Its not just a 'quick ' surgery that anyone can do properly. Attention must be taken to anticipate what the joints will do months or years down the line. anticipation of which muscles will contract and retract creating other deformities that might again need surgery or even more amputation in the future. Care must be taken to correct, at the time of amputation, any muscle and tendon imbalance with something called tendon transfers ( CLICK HERE TO LEARN ABOUT TENDON TRANSFER ).
