Ilizarov External Fixation

Sometimes doing surgery and placing screws and plates inside a patient does not give the best result. Occasionally we need a system that works like a scaffold on a building that is being repaired : that is called an external fixator ( developed by a doctor named Gavril Ilizarov in the 1950s hence the name ilizarov frame )

In cases where there is an active infection or large extensive wounds internal hardware (plates and screws) cannot be used, this is another perfect situation for  the use of an external fixator.

These fixators are also used to correct the most complicated of deformities please see some case examples below.
